b.     Board approved the first annual Mike Tingley's Scholarship Tournament. It will held on May 27-29 at Winslow Park . All proceeds from these tournaments will go to establish college scholarships for Rhode Island Female Athletes in Mike's name.

 

c.        Board looking to purchasing AED for field.

ii.                    Considering the placement of 13 year old “non-travel” players in the Senior Division on a case by case basis.

4.       New Business

a.       Size of teams for Spring and Fall Seasons

Individuals interested in coaching need to inform the Board of intent prior to the start of season allowing for  more teams, decreasing number of players on teams.

 

b.       Charity Tournament

 $5,200 has been collected for a local family through donations at snack bar throughout spring recreation, summer travel tournaments, fall ball, 50/50 raffle and Fall Charity Classic.

1.Spring 2010

            a) 1^st game scheduled for April 20^th.  Opening ceremonies April 24^th.

           b)  Senior division 11,12, 13.  Masters 14-18. 

           c)  Winter pitching clinic begins Friday December 4^th.

           d)  2010 forms being printed in preparation for spring registration. Possible mass email to go out to league members with registration attached.

 

2. Travel Team 2010

 

a)      Each travel team must send in a roster with names and addresses before indoor practices begin for insurance purposes.

b)      Pony tournaments are almost sold out.  14U division is the biggest.

c)      Next travel meeting December 9^th.  Tournaments filling up fast, teams need to pick theirs.

 

3. Satus of Winslow Park

           

a)      Meeting set up for December 22^nd with Mr. Dillon, AGS, Helen Taylor, and WFF per request of Mr. Dillon. Plans for the fields.

 

4. New Business

 

a)      Bylaws committee looking for possible help rewriting.

b)      Possible 30 year celebration June 12^th?  Still working on ideas.

1.Spring Season

            a) Dates for tryouts and clinic:   March 20, 2010 @ Tolgate.  12-2pm clinic for minor and instructional.  2-6pm designated for 10’s, 12’s, and Masters.  More definitive time slots will be posted on website.

           b)  Start of spring season:  Season will run from April 19^th- June 6^th.

           c)  Opening Day:  April 24^th.

           d)  Cleanup Day:  April 3^rd.

           e)  Spring season playoffs:  June 5 and 6 masters seniors and majors.  June 12 and 13 minors.

           f)  In-person signups for spring:  January 30^th  9am-12pm @ Dick’s and Warwick Police Station.

                                                                February 27^th  1-3pm @ Dick’s and Warwick Police Station.

 

4. New Business

 

a)      Umpire fees and tournament fees will be increasing.

b)      High school pitching from 43ft. this spring.

c)      Possible age change of our masters division to be 14 instead of 13.

d)     Winter clinics begin Fri. Dec. 4^th @ Vets High School 8:15-9:45pm.

President Chuck McCaughey called to order the general meeting of  Apponaug Girls Softball at 7:00pm at the Warwick Police Station meeting room.

1.Overview of 2009

             a)  Numbers were up in all seasons.  Spring 2009 was 3^rd straight year that showed an increase in AGS member, topping out at 433 players. 

             b) League aiming for something special for 2010 as it is AGS’s 30^th anniversary!

             c) Successful travel season.  Two state championships and one runner up, three other tournament championships.  Eight travel teams including our 8U All Star team.  2010 will have a total of ten teams including an 18U team, our first ever.

            d) Fall ball included teams statewide as well as a team from Connecticut.  After having to turn some teams away, we maxed out at 40 teams.

 

2. Winslow Park

 

a) League plans to be at current location for at least another year per recent phone conversations and updated information.  Possibility of relocation to be Strawberry Field, property very close to where we are currently.

 

 

3.  Board of Directors 2010

 

a)      Current members will continue on for 2010 season.  A few changes in titles and also a few new unfilled positions.  We have a new member to the board, Stephen Miga, who will be the Instructional/Minor player representative.  Welcome! 

b)      There are still vacancies.  Anyone interested should contact Chuck McCaughey.

 

4. New business/open discussion

            a)  League will be updating bylaws.  Jeff Caffrey will be on a committee to rewrite the bylaws.

 

c)      First 2010 season AGS Board meeting November 5, 2009 at Winslow Park Field House at 7:00pm.

 

d)     First 2010 travel meeting November 19, 2009 at Winslow Park Field House at 7:00pm.

 

e)      RI has decided to move pitching rubbers back to 43’ and we will be implementing this change Spring 2010.  Future discussion regarding what age/school year the masters division should start at. 

 

f)       Idea presented of the possibility of a league travel teams fundraiser. Possibly a pasta dinner?  All travel teams would have the opportunity to participate.

            a) 12U’s Recreational division playing Saturdays 9am and 11am on Fields 2&3.

           c) 10U’s Field 1 Saturday all day 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.  Field 4 Saturday 9am and 11am.

a)      Masters age Apponaug girls to be used for umpiring the Majors games on Saturdays at 9am, 11am, 1pm, and 3pm.

a) Limiting the number of teams outside of AGS per division to 1.

b) Start of fall ball to be Sept. 5^th – 6^th.  Season to last 6 weeks.

c) Fee to be $70/player.   

d) In age groups 12 and older there will be a travel division.

e) Double header games Saturdays and Sundays.

2. 2009-2010 Travel Teams

           a) Coaches letters due by August 10^th.

          b) Travel Committee will meet August 13^th.

          c) Try-outs to be held  August 22^nd and 23^rd.

          d) $300/player.  $400/family rate.

          e) Planning to have 18U team potentially playing 4-5 tournaments.

2. Open discussion

              a)  Upcoming ASA meeting in West Warwick on June 16^th.  At least 1 travel coach per team needs to be present.  At least 1 coach per team needs to be ACE trained.  Rosters need to be brought to meeting.

              b) Discussion concerning the future of the league in regards to relocation by airport.  More information needs to be obtained.  No firm plans yet.

              c)  Travel coaches picked times for practices.

           a) AGS will be sponsoring a run team to enter in the Beth Cyr Run/Walk scheduled for May 2.  Additional information to be posted on the AGS website.

          b) discussion regarding best way to handle high demand for toilet paper and paper towels during the season and especially during summer travel season.

a) Reviewed number of registrations to date.  More anticipated for Saturday’s tryouts.

d) General Meeting date set for Tuesday March 24, 2009 at the Warwick Police Station.

e) Mayor and Director of Parks & Recreation being notified of opening day April 25^th.

a) 103 players registered as of 02/09/09.  29 in Seniors, 22 in Minors, 17 in Major, and 27 in Masters.

b) Number of teams per division.  8 teams Masters, 5 teams Instructional, 6 teams Minors, 7 teams Majors, 8 teams Seniors.

c) Division Representatives are to look into who will be coaching again this season.

d) date of general meeting to be changed.  Date TBD.  Tentatively planning on sometime during the week of March 16-20.

e) Opening day, April 25^th there is a high school JV tournament scheduled.

a) Dates for spring in-person registration as stated on website are Saturday January 24^th 9am-1pm at Dicks and the Warwick Police Station and Saturday February 28^th 11am-3pm same locations.  Board members will be present at both locations on both dates.

b) Registration forms for spring will be dropped off by various board members to all the Warwick elementary schools.

c) Newspaper ad being looked into.

            a)  Apponaug hosting 3 tournaments upcoming summer 09’ as well as our fields being used for ASA States and N.E. Regionals.  Insurance for registered travel players all set.  First week of travel practices went well.

4. 2009 Recreation Season

      a)  President McCaughey considering setting up a clinic for using masters players as umpires in the major division.

       a) Brief discussion regarding possible replacement of fryolator in snack bar.

1. Updates

a)      President McCaughey gave highlights from recent Pony and ASA meetings. 

Pony has changed the birthdate cut-off.  New date is as of Dec. 31^st.  Also, player uniform number has to be on the game line-up card.

ASA has new rule starting 2009- at least 1 coach per team has to be ACE coach certified.  Certification obtained by taking an on-line test and paying a fee.

Regional changes:  States and Regionals are now open to anyone.  4 game guarantee. RI hosting 12’s and 14’s.  Maine hosting 16’s.

 2. Travel Teams

         a)   Discussion about 2009 travel tournaments and which tournaments might be possibilities outside of the ones hosted by AGS.  Travel coaches chose their indoor practice times. 

^.3. Recreational Season Team Sponsors and Signage Sponsors

     a)  Discussion about sending sponsorship letters and contacting supporting businesses earlier than last year. 

4. Spring Rec. Fees  

      a)  AGS Board of Directors voted to raise the cost of Spring Rec. to $70 per player.  Family fee will be $120.  These fees are applicable to the major and master divisions.  The minors and instructional divisions will remain at $50 a player.  Decision to make fees non-refundable once the season begins was agreed upon.

5. Spring Sign-ups

       a)  Reiterated that Spring Sign-up dates are January 24^th at both Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Warwick Police Station and February 28^th at those same locations.  AGS BOD voted to purchase a printer in preparation for sign-ups.

1. State of the League

a)      Airport Expansion: No change, 5 years from now possible start, may take field #1 but will be replaced 

b)      Financial: General update provided.  Approximately $4,000 in general fund and $20,000 in other funds

c)      Enrollment: numbers are up.  2008 had highest enrollment since the league went fastpitch. 10U enrollment strong during rec. season, concern over interest level in 10U travel.  2009 10U travel TBD.

 

2. 2009 Season

a)       Pick dates for in person sign-ups:  Dates were decided upon and are to be posted on the AGS website. Two potential locations for signups.  Dates are set for Saturday January24th and Saturday February 28^th.  Tentative locations are Warwick Police Station and Dick’s Sporting Goods.  Final dates with correct locations to be posted on AGS website. Plans to send out a mass email stating dates for signups.

Pick dates for Spring try-outs:  Winman is currently unavailable, John Henry making arrangements for clinic and tryout.  Potential dates discussed would be either March 14^th or March 21^st.  Settled on date for opening day- April 25^th.  Spring games to begin April 20^th.  Cleanup Day set for April 14^th.

3. 2009 Travel Season

a)      Use of our fields by Thunder for a Showcase Tournament:  Request by Thunder to be denied based upon board member votes.

b)     How big do we want our tournaments:  Looking to keep the number of teams in the older divisions to 24 in total based on the fields at Winslow Park.  Possible to have 6 more with younger teams playing on the small field.

c)      Winter practices, pitcher and catcher clinics:  Pitching clinics to begin Friday December 5^th from 8:15-9:45pm in small gym at Warwick Vets.  Winter practices set to begin Saturday January 3^rd and Sunday January 4^th at Tolgate.  Available times are Saturday 1:30-4:30pm and Sunday 8am-12:30pm.  CCRI is available Sunday from 6-8pm.
