Honoring Russell Freeman

Russell Freeman was a life-long friend and dedicated softball coach for AGS. When Russ passed away from COVID, a past player reached out to us to explore how the league could honor this dedicated softball community leader.

On Saturday, April 17th Russ will be honored at the place he called 'home'.

In addition to his long-standing job as a lieutenant at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston, Russell was also a long-time girls softball coach who enjoyed his time at first base. It was his chance to coach and watch his daughters, Quinn and Ingrid, as they moved through the league.

The families love of the game stretched beyond our park, as Russell helped coach many local teams, and was an active supporter of Tollgates program.

In his honor, the AGS Board of Directors unanimously voted to dedicate field 3 at Winslow Park, which is home of Apponaug softball, the Russell Freeman field. The ceremony is open to the public.

In addition, the league is planning to host all future championship games on the Russ Freeman Field.

The league would also like to thank Karly Evans for approaching our board with her drive to honor Freeman. Karly was instrumental in making this event come to light.

We hope this ceremony, field and moment will remind us all to #LiveLikeRuss.
